Melony Redondo, better known throughout the Dominica Republic as MelyMel, has slowly become one of the strongest and most respected female artists in the Latin urban music scene. More than a decade producing and releasing music has gotten her the nickname of ‘the mother of rap’ in her home country.

Born in Santo Domingo, MelyMel has accumulated more than 2.5 million followers on social media and since the moment she released her first Hip Hop/R&B single in 2005 - “Fresa” – the eyes of the genre’s enthusiasts have been all over her. She was invited to open shows for well-known acts like Violadores del Verso, N.O.R.E., and Tony Touch, amongst others.

2012 was a very important year for her career, because that was the moment when she finally got the recognition she deserved in a music scene strongly dominated by men. That recognition came as a consequence of the release of her first album - “Homónimo”, leading to  MelyMel being chosen to perform the official song representing the Dominican Republic for the Summer Olympics in London.

Her beauty, her charisma, and her talent opened a door for her in cinema. MelyMel has been invited by several movie directors in her home country to take roles on movies like “Feo de Día, Lindo de Noche” and “Locas y Atrapadas”. The latter garnered her the award for ‘Best Actress’ in 2014 at the Premios La Silla, an annual award show organized by the Dominican Film Industry Association (ADOCINE). That same year she released her second album “Eva del Rap” where she demonstrated she was able to rap both in Spanish and English, taking her career to the next level.

In 2016, while touring the United States, MelyMel was crowned as ‘Urban Queen’ in the New York Dominican Parade. Her career kept ascending and shot up when she reached more than one million views on YouTube with her single “Llegamos” in less than three weeks.

Due to her success as an independent artist, MelyMel signed a deal with ‘Empire Records’, the international powerhouse behind artists like Cardi B, Kendrick Lamar, Anderson, Paak, Fat Joe, Tyga, XXXTentacion, among many others. Her first single released under her new label was "IDGAF", an iconic Latin trap track produced by High Quality that earned her the award for ‘Best Music Video’ at the Premios Soberano of the Dominican Republic in early 2019.

“Dragon Queen” is MelyMel’s third studio album, propelled by strong singles like "No One" featuring Mozart La Para and "Cuando Salimos". Most recently, MelyMel released her latest trap track - “Se Te Apagó La Luz” – which features legendary urban artist Ivy Queen, who has been an inspiration and a role model for her. These two joined forces to demonstrate – once again – why they are two of the most important artists in the Latin urban music scene.
